Foundation grants support advocacy and protection of the rights to political freedom, blind justice, humane treatment, and international legal standards. The Foundation has a particular interest in protections from abuse of power, the use of economics to promote social justice, and women's rights and reproductive freedom. Principal among its efforts in this area are:

American Civil Liberties Union
The Foundation provides continuing support for the Safe and Free Program at the ACLU. This program is intended to curb abuses of power, particularly those resulting from various provisions of the U.S. Patriot Act.

The Foundation provides continuing support for core operations to promote the free press by protecting journalists around the world.

National Coalition Against Censorship
The Foundation provided support to create the Knowledge Project, which addresses concerns of scientific censorship in the United States. The Knowledge Project: Censorship and Science examines the clash between First Amendment principles of free expression and government suppression or distortion of scientific information.
